Where Reflections Bring Healing, Grace and Renewal

OLIGARCHY AT THE GATE: When Power FOrgets People

I came across a video today. At first, I laughed – actual out-loud laughter. The kind of laughter that rises from your toes and rumbles up your torso before landing in your mouth. Full-on laughter.

It felt good at first, as I thought, “Oh, he did not just say that,” – hand over my mouth. Suddenly, my laughter fell flat and was replaced with sadness.

Dear God…It was REAL. Worse yet, he believed what he was saying. Every word…and you could see the ‘gloating’ wrapped around him like he was adorned with a gem-filled crown.

There sat a U.S. senator – an elected official – blowing smoke up his own skirt. Nearly shouting and with the kind of tone that belongs in a satire skit…but wasn’t.

He boasted about his houses, his private planes, and sarcastically shrugged off everyday Americans as if they were background noise.

The mindset was disturbing on many levels – but mostly because of how it breeds, spreads, and toxifies beyond surface truths.

“How can I get by on one house? I need three houses.”

“I need jet planes to take me all over the world.”

“Think I’m going to be sitting in a waiting line at United?”

He then piously stated:

“Sorry American people…we’ve got the money, we’ve got the power, guess what – I’m a United States Senator.”

Ewww and Ouch! That is so lacking in character and honor.

but let’s not miss the bigger message here

This isn’t just about one man with not enough humility. This is about a system – one that’s allowed to bloat, boast, and belittle because too many of us have been conditioned to feel too small to challenge it.

This is what happens when power forgets it’s purpose. When elected seats become pedestals instead of platforms to serve. When leadership becomes luxury…and the people become invisible.

This, friends, is not leadership.

It’s oligarchy draped in a silk tie. It’s ego on autopilot. It’s a VIP club with velvet ropes where we- the people- are stuck staring through a window, carrying the bill.

Let me remind you (and him): He wasn’t born important. He wasn’t crowned or anointed. He was elected to serve.

Somewhere along the lines, he swapped out servant for celebrity, and forgot that public office is not a throne – it’s a job.

Here’s where the real sting sets in: They only get away with this because we let them. If we scroll past, if we shrug, if we sigh and say “Well, that’s just how it is…” Then nothing changes. Because while he’s flying private and bathing in praise, we’re standing in line – not just at airports, but in the E.R., at the food bank, in traffic, in debt, in the thick of what they’ve decided is beneath them – and the tragedy isn’t just in what he said. It’s how comfotable he felt saying it.

But here’s the part that sets fire to the fog, and what they’re not counting on:

  • We are not invisible.
    • We are THE PEOPLE – the ones who wake before sunrise and grind ’til the job is done. We keep the lights on, the shelves stocked, the kids safe, and the nation afloat.
  • We are not “little”.
    • He may have three houses, private jets, and a self-adorned crown – but we have the foundation it all rest upon.
  • And we are not without voice.
    • He may think he’s the main character, but we are the ones writing the next chapter. We are the workers, the teachers, the parents, the caretakers -the ones holding hands in hospital rooms, and yes – standing in long lines – most with side hustles like armor, just to make it to the next paycheck. We do it not for applause, but because we were raised to stand, serve, and rise with honor.

Wake Up! Speak Out! Show Up! Vote Loud! Because if we don’t, they’ll keep living large while we carry the cost.

Let this be the moment we stop being polite about arrogance. Let this be the spark that reminds the so-called elite:

  • We’re not background noise.
  • We’re not the little people.
  • We are THE PEOPLE – We are the storm.
  • And no Senator, we are not impressed – but we do vote.

So let this not just be a post we read, but a line in the sand we draw. Let it be your awakening. The unshrinking. The holy rise of the people who know their worth and power, stand on their faith, and speak out with fire of truth and light of God.

We are not the background noise. We are the foundation they stand upon. We are the voice that carries. We are the spine of this great nation. We are not forgotten. We are the tremble of righteousness that just took the mic… and we have been quiet long enough.

so what can we do?

Let’s turn outrage into outreach. Here’s how to rise with action. Because let’s be honest here – if you choose not to rise, or not to act – not to be a part of the solution – then you are merely a part of the problem in the equation.

Here is how you can rise right now:

  • Download the 5 Calls App.
    • It makes calling your representatives and senators easy.
      • If you’r tired of shouting at your screen or scrolling in frustration – this is your moment.
      • 5 Calls is a free app that helps you call your elected officials directly.
      • Choose an issue. Use the script.
      • No digging for numbers. No guessing what to say.
      • You just pick an issue that matters, and it guides your voice straight to their ears.

It takes 60 seconds. One minute. One tap. One voice. Your voice may be the one that tips the scales. Let them hear your conviction – not just your frustration. Voices matter more than writing letters because a live voice is immediate. Personal. Undeniable. When you call – your message can’t be ignored, filtered, delayed, or lumped into a pile with 10,000 others. It creates a record of personal engagement, a real human they have to account for. Senators ask their staff: “How many calls today?” “On what issue?” “Were they for, or against?”

That log matters more than a printed stack of petitions. Its rare and it stands out because most people do not call. So when you take the time to do so – when you take 60 seconds to show up and speak up – Your voice rings weight, effort, conviction, and urgency. Just one call can represent hundreds who stayed silent.

  • Use your platforms to share posts/videos like this –
    • no matter how small – because truth multiplies when it echoes. Someone out there still thinks they are alone in their frustrations. Let them see they are not. Post and talk about it.
  • Remember Your Worth
    • This isn’t about polotics. It’s about dignity. It’s about holding people accountable who use you as a platform – who were never meant to reign, but to represent. Remember you are not ‘little’. You are a part of the people ‘as a whole’, who make this nation move.

So let us not be confused as ‘little’, forgotten, or the background noise of history. Let us remain it’s heartbeat. Let us stop confusing silence with peace, and stop mistaking position with purpose.

It’s not just our right to speak, it’s our honor and vindication for every unseen voice, unheard cry, and every forgotten voter who deserves better. It’s our job to hold those we take the time to vote in, to remain accountable – and to never let power forget the people.

So, no senator, I am not impressed. I’m less than dazzled. Not by your jets, or how many houses you have acquired, or even that you feel too big to stand in a line. I would, however, be impressed- by your works of good character and honor while held in the office you were so opportuned by the people to hold. People you now seem to forget. People you hold no apologies for. People you owe – not excuses – but accountability.

I would be impressed if the office you were entrusted with was met with humility, gratitude, service, and honor. The kind that reflects the people who placed you there. The kind that remembers: you were not crowned. You were elected – and in the same manner can be ejected, just as swiftly.

People deserve accountability.

Not your arrogance.

I’m not interested in your apologies – or your lack thereof.

You were voted in to be our voice. We deserve action.

"Because liberty without accountability is just arrogance in disguise."

"This is still our house where justice is for all, not just for some."
"Honor the seat by honoring the people."

"Title means nothing if not led with character."

Signed, the backbone you forgot. Still here, still rooted in truth, grit, grace in my heart and fire in my bones.

Well said! This is a trend that had bothered me four some time, and you identified the real issue: us. I care little to hear the complaints about *insert politician here*–despite the validity– when it is us, as the electorate, that created the system we find so distasteful.

Until we do better, the ball will continue to bounce. Great thoughts!

Absolutely Good Sir…Amen! The first step in any solution is: presence.
